Oolloo Crossing: Douglas Daly
Oolloo Crossing
The crossing is a good spot to fish for barramundi with plenty of dead trees providing shelter for these predatory fish. I have seen small tinnies being launched below the crossing. Bush camping is possible on the banks above the river. No water or facilities are available.
“You should always be aware of the risk of a saltwater crocodile attack in all Top End waterways.”
Oolloo Crossing is one of the NT government’s conservation areas. At times you may be able to cross the Daly River at Oolloo Crossing. Once you have crossed the river, access to the property on the opposite bank is prohibited. The crossing provides access to the pastoral land on the opposite side of the Daly River. The owners of this land are the Wagiman and it falls under the Upper Daly Aboriginal land Trust. From what I can gather, this land is being leased out to local farmers for grazing.
Oolloo road then seems to change name and is indicated as Oolloo Xing Wombungi once crossing over the Daly. The road then runs from the Upper Daly Aboriginal Land Trust back into Tipperary Station, only to enter the Upper Daly Aboriginal Land Trust again where it seems to come to an end.
Getting There
Oolloo crossing is located midpoint between Katherine and Darwin and is about 200 km from both Darwin and Katherine. From Stuart Highway take Dorat road (route 23) and then turn onto Oolloo Road. Oolloo Road is initially a sealed road however it does become a graded dirt road towards the end. Travel south along Oolloo Rd and once you pass the Douglas Daly Tourist Park continue for 35.4 km past the turnoff to the east (Cadell Rd). Remain on the left fork Oolloo Xing Wombungi Rd, this road is not a graded road, for just over 2km till the crossing car park.
