Central Desert Region
This is the desert region to the north of Alice Springs that covers about 280 000 square kilometres with a population of about 4000 people. The Tanami Desert forms the western section and the bulk of this region. Access is provided by the the Tanami Road 1000 km of predominantly dirt and gravel road linking Alice Springs to the Kimberly region. This is a desolate track that takes you through the heart of the desert. The eastern section is made up of the Harts Range and the East MacDonnell range. Explore this area by travelling along the Plenty “Highway” and sections of the Binns Track to prospect Gemtree, Trephina Gorge and Arltunga Historical Reserve.
MacDonnell Region
MacDonnell Regional occupies an area of 268,329 square kilometres located to the south of Alice Springs. The linchpin to tourism in the NT is Uluru the main tourist attraction in this region. However this area has an abundance of tourist attractions take some time and investigate this region. Alice Springs offers reptile parks, museums and art galleries as well as all the amenities of a large regional centre. Head out to experience the West and East MacDonnell range with its waterholes, gorges and historical sites. Explore Palm Valley, Hermannsburg, Fink Gorge National Park, Kings Canyon, Rainbow Valley and the Simpson Desert.
