Katherine Region
Central Katherine Region
Katherine Town represents the crossroads of the north were the Stuart Highway and the Savannah Highway intersect. Katherine is the forth largest town in the NT and serves as a launching pad into the surrounding countryside. Tourist attractions include the following destinations: Low Level Nature Park, Springvale Homestead and Katherine Hot Springs within Katherine. In the Katherine region you will find Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), Cutta Cutta Caves, Elsey National Park with thermal pools, and Giwining/Flora River Nature Park.
Victoria River Region
Located to the west of Katherine the Boab trees and red rocky ridges of the Victoria escarpment form the central theme to this area. The escarpment then gives way to sandstone ranges in the northwest and forms the transition zone to the central desert areas in the south along the Buntine Highway. Gregory National Park the second largest park in the NT is the mid point to the region and a must for the 4X4 enthusiast. To the north west is the Keep River National park with its sand stone hills that provide the NT with its own version of the Bungle Bungles.
Roper River, Gulf Region
Located to the east and south of Katherine is this a vast and sparsely inhabited area. Borroloola with a population of about 1000 people is the largest town in this region. The Roper and McArthur River as well as coastal fishing ensure this region remains a popular as a fishing destination. The Limmen National Park, Lorrella Springs Station, Carabirini Conservation Reserve and Poppy’s pool are just some of the destinations to be enjoyed in this area. Don’t forget to stay over at Daly Waters Pub found to the south of Katherine just off the Stuart highway.
