If you are travelling along the Stuart highway or staying over in Tennant Creek this man-made dam offers a great spot to have a picnic and a swim. Located just 1.6 km from Stuart Highway on a sealed road it is an ideal spot to take a break for the weary traveller. Tall shady trees with grass banks and tables on the banks of the lake provide an inviting environment to relax and enjoy the area.

The custodians of the land the Warumungu people welcome victors to this site but ask that you observe protocols during your visit. The site is only open during daylight hours and is closed after dark, no camping is allowed. Walking paths can be found around the dam as well as a cycle path from tenant Creek to the dam.

The dam was constructed from 1997 to 1980 after residents proposed the construction of the dam purely for recreational activities. It was named after a mine just to the north of the dam the Mary Ann Mine. The owners of the mine Wilson and Howes named the mine 'Mary Ann' after their respective daughters Mary Jean and Wendy Ann. The nearby watercourse then became known as Mary Ann Creek or Mary Ann Billabong
